A trio of wins in four games last week improved the Central Decatur baseball team’s record to 5-8 on the season.
The Cardinals closed out the week Friday night in Leon with a solid 12-4 win over East Union. That league victory moved CD to 2-7 in Pride of Iowa Conference play.
The Eagles led 4-2 in the fourth, when Matt Anderson hit a two-run single to knot the game. CD took over the contest in the fifth inning, with a five-run frame. Spenser Fuller smacked a two-run double and Anderson drove in another run during the rally.
Fuller put the finishing touches on the win with a three-run double in the sixth inning, to make it a 12-4 game.
Fuller finished the night 2-for-3 with six RBIs and one run scored. Anderson was also 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Jordan Welch drove in one run. Andy Akers earned the win, as he allowed four runs and struck out 11 in six strong innings of work.
The Cardinals suffered their lone loss of the week the night before with a 16-6 five-inning defeat at Southeast Warren. The Warhawks led 10-0 after three innings, but CD battled back with a six-run fourth. SEW tacked on three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the POI battle early.
Cameron Huett and Preston Pedersen each drove in a run for the Cardinals. Welch took the loss on the hill.
The night before at Mount Ayr, the Cardinals handed the Raiders a 13-8 loss on their home diamond. After Mount Ayr scored four times in the sixth inning to tie the game, the Cardinals exploded for five runs in the seventh for the win.
Josh Richardson drove in the go-ahead run with a single and later scored on an Anderson two-run single. Fuller smacked a two-run homer to close out the scoring.
That was the second homer of the game for Fuller, who blasted a grand slam in the third to give the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.
Fuller finished the night 2-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs scored. Anderson and Richardson drove in two runs each and Anderson had one RBI. Anderson also picked up the win, as he allowed eight runs on 11 hits and struck out five in seven innings of work.
The week began on June 22 with a dominating 14-1 win at home over Murray. The Cardinals scored four times in the first, three more in the second and six in the third to put this non-conference win away early.
Anderson led the offensive attack with a 2-for-2 night at the plate with three RBIs and four runs scored. Welch, Fuller and Huett drove in two runs each, while Akers and Welch each crossed home plate three times. Welch picked up the win, as he allowed one run on three hits.
