Weldon News

By Mabel Shay/Kathy Mason

This has been a beautiful weekend.  Soon the fields will be dry enough to resume planting.

Elaine Canney called Charlotte Jones May 7. Jim and Elaine Canney plan to leave Kingsland, Texas around May 18 to come to Iowa for the summer. Bill and Marie Waugh of Des Moines (formerly Marie was Marie James of Weldon) were guests at Jim and Elaine Canney’s last month.  Heinz and Carol Wypich of Des Moines were visitors at Elaine and Jim Canney’s. Carol is the former Carol Herron of Weldon.

Pat McBroom, Bessie Martin and Mabel Shay had lunch with Betty Wallace on Monday and then they played bridge. Beverly Jackson and Mary Case of Lamoni visited Betty last week.

Weldon Country Club has resumed the summer Saturday lunches 11:30—1:30. Free lunch offering is meat balls, scalloped potatoes, macaroni salad, homemade bread and pumpkin bars.  Join us for a great lunch and old friends.

Betty Savely and Kathy Mason attended a graduation party Saturday in Leon for Kayla Hatfield.  Grandparents are Connie and Art Easton.

Mabel Shay and Mike and Dorothy Schmidt of Osceola attended the last Mass services and reception of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy. The church has been in service 156 years. More than 200 people gathered for the final mass last Saturday.

Weldon Bridge played in Van Wert Thursday. Phyllis Folland, Charlotte Jones, Shelah Goodwin, Mary Case, Kenlyn Kellso, Mabel Shay, Juanita Owens, Doris Landphair, Virginia Lewis, Fran Ellis, Mary Kay Case and Pat McBroom were present and Phyllis Folland brought treats.

Clarke County Landfill Commission voted to proceed with a transfer station to replace the landfill after it reaches capacity, but Osceola City Council hasn't given its support for the idea. What do you think is the best option for the city of Osceola?
A transfer station would be most convenient, even if it comes at slightly higher costs than direct hauling and keeps the city in the 28E agreement.
If direct hauling to Madison County Landfill or Metro Waste Authority is the cheapest option, it's the best choice despite some inconvenience to those who currently drop off waste at Clarke County Landfill.
Although it could be the most expensive option, Clarke County should build another landfill.
I don't care what the city decides.
