Audit report released for Clarke County

Hunt, Kain & Associates, P.C., certified public accountants, released an audit report on Clarke County, Iowa.

The County had local tax revenue of $13,285,106 for the year ended June 30, 2008, which included $239,562 in local option sales and services taxes, $276,233 in gaming taxes, and $516,174 in tax credits from the state. The county forwarded $9,577,560 of the local tax revenue to the townships, school districts, cities and other taxing bodies in the county.

The county retained $3,707,546 of local tax revenue to finance county operations, a 15.0 percent decrease from the prior year. The decrease is due primarily to the recession of the county’s local option sales and service tax. Other revenue included charges for service of $918,017, operating grants and contributions of $3,120,655 capital grants and contributions of $985,600, interest on investments of $138,797 and other general revenues of $63,315.

Expenses for county operations totaled $8,681,798, a 12.3 percent increase from the prior year. The increase in expenses is due primarily to the cleanup and repair costs associated with flooding and winter storms. Expenses included $3,405,047 for roads and transportation, $1,623,755 for public safety and legal services, and $1,140,658 for mental health.

A copy of the audit report is available for review in the County Auditor’s office, in the office of Auditor of the State, and on the Auditor of State’s website at http://auditor.iowa.gov/reports/reports.htm.
