Drawings of local buildings on display
Over 100 drawings of Clarke County buildings are on display on the store-front windows on the south side of the Osceola square at 128 W. Jefferson. The pictures will remain on exhibit until Wednesday, April 29, when they will be submitted to the statewide “Architecture by Children Drawing Contest.”
All Murray, Clarke and home-schooled children, grades K-6, were given official entry forms and asked to draw their favorite community building. They have a chance to win one of six savings bond prizes totaling $350.
“I was surprised the most popular building was the Osceola library, which is lovely to look at, but difficult to draw,” said Mary Ellen Kimball, project chair for the Clarke Area Arts Council. “By asking children to draw one of their favorite buildings in town, they began looking at the architecture around them.”
Molly Naumann, architectural historian, has been Clarke Area Arts Council Artist-in-the-Schools three times, increasing awareness of our area’s architecture and it’s importance in history, economy and lifestyle.
Local project supporters working with the Iowa Architectural Foundation include the Clarke Area Arts Council, Osceola Chamber Main Street, Murray Schools, Clarke Community Schools, City of Osceola and the Kimball Family Foundation.
