June police report

June went from monsoon rains to hot and humid. The PD executed several search warrants from various narcotics investigations. We believe one of these will end up a Federal case. Officers investigated an accident that destroyed one of our new lights and speed signs at the Kossuth and Highway 34 cross walk. The driver was arrested on various traffic charges and had insurance. We investigated a suicide and a motorcycle accident with injuries at the Four Corners.

The city has experienced an up tic in burglaries. The officers are diligently working on identifying the culprits. If anyone has any information we’d love to hear it.

We placed the speed trailer in the 1900 block of Truman Road clocking west bound traffic. It was in place for 16 days and clocked 21,885 vehicles that were west bound. That is over 1,300 vehicles per day going west bound. The average speed was 20.8 mph with 86.7 percent of the motorists traveling at or below the speed limit. Remember this was the 35 miles per hour speed limit. This was prior to the speed limit being reduced to 25 mph. We will return the trailer to that area later in the year to check on compliance with the new slower speed limit.

Statistically, we responded to 550 calls for service in June. That remains at the 18 calls per day average. This is extraordinary for a town of our size. Officers arrested 28 people on 47 separate charges. Officers issued 14 traffic citations and 11 written warnings and investigated eight accidents.

In the month of June officers responded to five fireworks complaints. As an aside, since the first of July Officers have responded to six complaints.
