DMACC students compete at PBL national competition

The Phi Beta Lambda student business organization represented Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) at the National Leadership Conference held in San Antonio, TX June 24-27. Students earned the opportunity to compete at the national level by placing first or second in their respective event during the State Leadership Conference held in March. The students, accompanied by their Advisers Joe Hanson, Susan McCoy and Chris Moon, competed against other college students from across the U.S. in various business-related events.

Students participating included: Amanda Atkinson of Norwalk (Entrepreneurship Concepts and Organizational Behavior and Leadership); Angel Nunez Torres of Osceola (Human Resource Management event and Job Interview); Bobbi Johnson of Boone (Client Service and Insurance Concepts); Brent Gustofson of Boone and Noah Heintz of Ames (Economic Analysis & Decision Making team event); Corie Culver of Ankeny (Accounting Principles and Business Decision Making team event); Zachary Koepp of Clive (Business Decision Making team event and Business Presentation); Gianna Crees of West Des Moines (Networking Concepts and Sports Management & Marketing); Ha Ho of Des Moines (Client Service and Global Analysis & Decision Making); Jenny Mayer of Melbourne (Management Concepts and Information Management); Kelsey Adams of Ames (Financial Concepts and Entrepreneurship Concepts); and Mikaela Broich of Boone and Darlene Waltemeyer of State Center (Business Law Team event and the Desktop Publishing Team event).

Gustofson and Heintz placed seventh in the nation in the Economic Analysis & Decision Making event. Adams placed tenth in the nation in Entrepreneurship Concepts. Nunez Torres placed third in the nation in the Job Interview category.

The state chapter, Iowa PBL, received recognition in the PBL North Central region for achieving the largest increase in membership and for recruitment of local chapters.

In addition to the competitive events, students had the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops on topics related to their educational and career pursuits.
