May police report

The speed trailer was placed in the 400 block of East Ayers Street, recording west bound traffic from May 8-15 for a total of seven days. The speed zone in this residential area is 25 mph. The trailer only records traffic coming to it not going away. It would be reasonable to assume that as many vehicles went east as went west. I live in that area and can attest that the trailer started picking up vehicles at East Street some two blocks away from the trailer location.

In that week a total of 4,224 vehicles, 603 vehicles per day, were clocked going west bound. Of the 4,224 vehicles 87.5 percent were at or below the posted speed limit of 25 mph. An additional 12 percent were between 25 and 35 mph. So 99 percent travelled at 35 mph or less. There were two vehicles that were at 45 mph or greater. We usually allow a 10 mph buffer. Of the total 4,224 vehicles the average speed was 15.8 mph.

Traffic is heaviest between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. with spikes at 7 a.m. then again from 3-4 p.m.
