CHARITON – The Chariton Chargers put together some late-inning heroics to spoil Clarke’s first game of the season May 22.

Clarke opened up the game quickly, knocking in four runs in the top of the first inning.

The Indians then added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage before Chariton mounted its comeback.

Conner Deutsch and Evan Hagen both had multi-hit performances for Clarke as each went 2-for-3 on the day and both were credited with an RBI. Deutsch also doubled for the Indians.

On the base path, the Indians were moving as they racked up nine stolen bases, including four from Payton Winship, who finished the day 1-3 with two runs and drew a walk.

The Chargers plated a run in the fourth and four in the fifth inning to tie things up before crossing the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Winship got the starting nod for Clarke, throwing 2 1/3 innings of worked before being replaced by Zethann May.

The rest of Clarke’s baseball games from last week and Tuesday of this week against Davis County were postponed due to weather.
