James Sylvester Romine, 79, of New Virginia died Monday, May 20, 2019, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., in Osceola with the Rev. Dave Polich officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola. Visitation will be Monday, May 27, at the funeral home with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Alzheimer’s Association. James, son of Harold and Hazel (Handley) Romine, was born Dec. 6, 1939, in Des Moines. He lived in Des Moines until 1988, when he moved to New Virginia. In his early years, James joined the U.S. Navy for four years and was stationed in Manila, Philippines.
James then became an employee of the United States Postal Service, where he was employed many years before retiring in 1999. During his employment, he was active in the APWU Postal Union, where he was a steward and union president from 1974-77. He then became a national business agent from 1981-87. He also raised cattle when he moved to New Virginia.
James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judi; daughters, Michelle Lubavs and Susan Romine; grandchildren, Heather Bradshaw, Danielle (Jesse) Heathcote, Marchelle Eblen, Jessica Lubavs, Jarrett Lubavs and Terry Starrett and 13 great-grandchildren.
