The Murray FFA Chapter held their Annual Banquet Monday, March 11. The Clarke County Cattlemen’s and the Cooking Club provided the meal. 90 guests and 25 FFA members attended the banquet. Many award recipients were recognized at the banquet. The following freshman received their Greenhand degree: Tyson Nall, Hannah Paschke, Abbe Baumfalk, Savannah Mann, Chloe Church, and Brooke Shannon. The Star Greenhand was given to two freshmen, Brooke Shannon and Hannah Paschke. The following sophomores received their Chapter degree: Colton Hiatt, Chance Lecy, Emma Decker, Katy Gibbs, Cole Lecy, Fisher Richman, Daniel Little, Kinzee Eggers, Colton Siefkas, and Jace Rodecker. Four seniors, Kayla Wookey, Ally Waske, Britta Callstrom, and Hailey Chew will be receiving their Iowa degree at the 91st Iowa State FFA Convention in April. Kayla Wookey received the Star Chapter Placement award. She has been involved in over ten activities above the Chapter level and has worked over seven hundred and fifty hours on her family’s farm, and has her own herd of cattle. Breianna Klein was the senior selected for the Dekalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award. She received this award for having the highest grade point average above her fellow agricultural classmates. Britta Callstrom received the FFA Academic Achievement Award. This award recognizes seniors who have maintained the highest GPA and active involvement in their FFA Chapter among their classmates. Britta was recognized for this achievement at the District FFA Convention March 2. Hailey Chew was recognized as the top fruit salesperson.
The following members were recognized for having the top activity points in their class: freshman Brooke Shannon and Hannah Paschke with 49 points, Daniel Little in the sophomore class with 57 points, Kegan Johnson and Bailey Frederick in the junior class with 54 points, and Kayla Wookey in the senior class with 67 points. Kayla was also the highest overall point member.
This year, the chapter decided to recognize many of the members that have helped them over the past year. These members were recognized for their outstanding support and all they do for the Murray FFA Chapter. Craig and Liz Justice were recognized with the Honorary Chapter Degree. Jessica Travis, Dianne Oswald, Mindy Oswald, Jerry Shields, and Staci Heaberlin were all recognized as recipients of the Outstanding Service Award for the many ways in which they have helped the chapter.
To close out the banquet, the retiring 2018-2019 Murray FFA Chapter Officers were recognized and the new officers installed. The 2019-2020 Murray FFA Chapter Officer team is as follows: Brooke Shannon- Student Council Representative, Emma Decker- Treasurer, Kinzee Eggers and Hannah Paschke- Co-Reporters, Chance Lecy- Sentinel, Bailey Frederick and Katy Gibbs- Co-Secretaries, Daniel Little- Vice President, and Kegan Johnson- President. The Murray FFA will be travelling to the State FFA Convention April 15-16. Members will be competing in Career Development Events, attending Leadership Workshops, receiving awards, and networking with potential employers and colleges. The Chapter also has a spring petting zoo/Ag day planned. To round out the school year, a Spring Flower Sale is planned for May 4 at the Community Flower and Garden Sale in Osceola and May 11 at the Murray Community Greenhouse.
