Onward and upward

I-35 sends eight to district wrestling; CD pushes two

Interstate 35 wrestling took full advantage of its sectional tournament Saturday as the Roadrunners advanced eight wrestlers into the district tournament, but also qualified for the regional dual team tournament.

As a squad I-35 finished with 240 team points, taking first place in Class 1A Sectional 4 by a landslide. Southeast Warren finished in second with 162.5 points.

“We got upset in a couple places, but we upset some people in a couple places,” said I-35 head coach Ryan Snyder. “It’s February. It always happens like that.”

For the Roadrunners five wrestlers topped their respective brackets and three more qualified with a second place finish.

Class 1A No. 3 Casey Baker took home the title at 120 with two major decision wins, including his 12-4 finals victory over 10th-ranked Randy Jimenez of Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas.

Tryston Palmer also claimed his 132-pound bracket. Palmer needed a 9-4 decision to escape his opening round match and followed that with two pins, including a first round win over top-seeded Trent Terrell of Wayne.

“He’s a sophomore. He’s been in the mix for two years. He just needed to get that big win. You know he finally got over that hump,” said Snyder. “We’ve been looking for a big win out of him.”

Ethan Elliott defended his No. 4 ranking with two first round pins to take the sectional and advance to districts while Drew Kirkpatrick used two pins and a major decision to solidify the 170-pound bracket in his favor.

Antonio Arzani had a bit more drama at 195 with a win by fall and then a 4-2 decision win in the championship round over Bryce Vanderlune of Southeast Warren/M-D.

Evan Woosley and Ryley Snell were both forced into wrestlebacks but both ended their day with pins at their respective 126 and 285 weight classes.

Joey Bregar lost his championship match to seventh-ranked Colby Page of SEW/M-D, but his 6-4 decision semifinal win over Tegan Carson of Central Decatur kept him out of a wrestleback and put him in the district tournament at 182 pounds.

CD sends two onward

Central Decatur finished sixth in the team points with 107 total points Saturday and advanced two of its wrestlers on to the district tournament.

Brody Patterson dropped his championship match at 106 pounds to Damon Hayes of East Union, but took full advantage of his wrestleback, pinning I-35’s Isaiah Smith in 3:22 to clinch second place.

Elliot Ness was the Cardinals’ only other district qualifier, who also finished in second place in Liberty Center.

Ness had a win by fall to open the sectional tournament and then a major decision win in the semifinals to advance to the championship round where he fell on a 7-5 decision.

“They could have just as easily went out number one,” said CD head coach Brian Carson. “Didn’t fall their direction. Hopefully that next week we get a little luck at the state qualifiers. Just a tough day. We knew it was going to be a tough day.

“We ended up this season 12-20 in duals this year with 16 guys out. ... We score about 400 more team points (this season),” said Carson. “We have almost everybody back so we could have a nice, solid season next year.”
