Harold Keith Akes, 96, of Osceola died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018, at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 103 NE Mill St., in Leon with the Rev. Rick Hawkins officiating. Burial was in Leon Cemetery in Leon. A memorial fund has been established by the family. Online condolences may be left at www.sladefuneralhome.com.
Harold Keith Akes, son of Warren and Laura (Buckingham) Akes, was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Decatur City. Harold attended school in LeRoy, and graduated in 1940.
In 1942, he married Zelma Oliver and became the father of a daughter, Joann. During World War II, Harold served his country in the United States Army from January 1943 to January 1946, with overseas duty in the Philippines, and then Japan, near the end of World War II.
On June 11, 1948, Harold married Virginia Henson of LeRoy. The couple first lived in Albany, Missouri, where Harold attended watchmaking school. They lived in Osceola, then Eldora before moving to Iowa City, where they lived for 31 years. After he retired as an equipment technician at the University of Iowa, they moved back to Osceola in 1984.
Harold is survived by his wife of 70 years, Virginia Akes of Osceola; four grandchildren; a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Marion Akes of Osceola; nephew Verle (Arlene) Akes of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; niece Cheryl (Jeff) Sjolin of Atlantic; and other relatives and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Joann (Dick) Green; and brothers, Dean “Static” (Lila) Akes and Wayne “Chigger” Akes.
