Elmer “Huck” Strange, son of William Strange and Bertha Lee Morrison Strange, was born Nov. 30, 1928, in Knox City, Missouri, and passed from this life Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola at 89 years of age.
Huck grew up in Knox City, Missouri, and Osceola. He was united in marriage to Helen Marie Rice on March 5, 1950, at Des Moines, and they moved to their farm near New Virginia in 1958. Huck and Helen raised their four boys on the farm.
Huck farmed, worked as a welder, ran his own salvage yard, ran a bulldozer and worked for Brady Manufacturing and Phillips Petroleum. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, mushroom hunting, running a bulldozer, playing cards and telling stories with family and friends. He was a member of Neophyte Masonic Lodge No. 301 of New Virginia.
Those relatives who preceded Elmer “Huck” in death were his parents, Bertha and William Strange; wife Helen Marie Strange; brothers, Theodore, Stelmor, Everett, Alfred, Robert, Ernest and William; and sisters, Effie, Evelyn, Edna, Dora and Mary.
Huck leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Richard (Connie) Strange of New Virginia, Cary (Peggy Robuck) Strange of New Virginia, Leonard W. (Deann) Strange of New Virginia and Randy G. (Georgia) Strange of Indianola; grandchildren, Becky (Steve) Reed of Adel, Mona (Rich) Fiscus of Des Moines, Melanie Fiscus of Wilsonville, Oregon, Mandy (Kurt Sudbrock) Strange of Indianola, Matt (Nicole) Strange of New Virginia, Maranda Strange of Altoona, Michael Strange of New Virginia, Justin (Monica) Strange of New Virginia, Tiffany (John Bortell) Johnson of New Virginia, Chris (Sarah) Strange of Indianola and Don (Jen) Strange of Indianola; great-grandchildren, Malcolm Scott, Steve Reed Jr., Emily Fiscus, Catarina Fiscus, Robert Fiscus, Cassandra Fiscus, Delana Goutremout, Dillon Strange, Lance Strange, Levi Huck Strange, Mya Strange, Laura Strange, Keegan Strange, Kelsey Strange, Tara Johnson, Kloey Bortell, Quinn Bortell, Lauren Strange, Aleigha Strange, Whitney Hunt, Joey Strange, Dalton Strange, Dawson Strange and James Strange; sisters-in-law, Maxine Strange of Collins, Missouri, June Oldes of Des Moines, Ann Wolfram of Eldorado Springs, Missouri, and Ruth Sullenberger of Pleasant Hill; brother-in-law Don (Lynne) Rice of Des Moines; as well as other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., in Osceola with Pastor Bruce Giese officiating. Visitation was Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. Masonic service by Neophyte Masonic Lodge No. 301 from New Virginia. Family greeted friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home.
