July Police activity report

One of the highlights of the month was of course the 4th of July festivities, its parade and the carnival. To manage the traffic for the parade requires 8 staff members. The parade, I thought, was as long as usual if not a bit longer. I would say the attendance was normal. The fireworks were excellent and since moving to the casino many years ago, at my suggestion, has not produced the huge traffic problems we used to encounter when they were discharged at Siemens ballfields. The beer tent located on the Courthouse grounds presented no problem and we did end up arresting one carnival worker prior to their departure from town. Informationally, the department paid out 46.5 hours of overtime to manage the parade and the Fun Run the following Saturday.

During the parade we had a car roll out of a driveway and into Grade Lake. No one was driving. However, the collective response from the PD, FD, DNR and EMS was excellent.

We also patrolled the Clarke County Fair at various times. The fair had no problems this year as usual.

The department traveled to Clarinda and to the Iowa City to transport prisoners from those locations to face charges we have filed. We dealt with two large water main breaks on W. Clay, an injury accident at Old 34 and new 34, an injury accident at Fillmore and 34 and two deceased persons.

Oh, and since the approval of the RMS and computer system that project is now in full swing. The goal is to be up and running by September. Thank You!

Statistically, officers responded to 398 calls for service and self-initiated 155 contacts. The department investigated 11 accidents, arrested 39 people on 60 offenses, issued 28 citations, 33 written warnings, 20 verbal warnings and spent 16.5 hours in stationary patrol in various parts of the city. The square received 7.5 hours of foot patrol.
