Roadrunners take fifth at State Dual Team Tournament

DES MOINES — From eighth to fifth, a year's time has made a difference in Interstate 35's finish at the State Dual Team Tournament. But the Roadrunners are always looking forward.

Interstate 35 fell to state runner-up Denver 38-32 in the quarterfinals, before going on to defeat Woodbury Central 52-21 and West Sioux 53-15.

“We’ll build on it. We’re looking to try and win championships and be competitive every year," Interstate 35 coach Ryan Snyder said. "Last year we were eighth and this year we’re fifth. We lose a big solid senior class, but we also have a solid freshman class that couldn’t crack this lineup.”

Seniors Brody Nelson (126), Brayden Egli (152) and Jake Hutton (285) wrestled for the final time and all won at least one match Wednesday.

"All five of the seniors came up big in the postseason and in February," Snyder said. Three of them aren’t wrestling tomorrow, but what they did in the duals, you can’t ask for more."

Fellow seniors Jacob Steinlage (160) and Zac Willey (138) will both compete in the traditional team tournament that starts Thursday, as will Casey Baker (120) and Ethan Eliott (145).
