Clarke wrestling gets in its knocks

With two meets to hang their hats on, the Clarke wrestling team knows more about itself to know what to work on moving forward.

CORNING — The Indians started their season Thursday at Southwest Valley, and competed in a tight dual against Southwest Valley, a 40-36 loss.

Clarke defeated Mount Ayr 52-24 and was defeated by Shenandoah 51-30.

Grabbing the first dual win of the year was a satisfying feeling for the victorious Indians.

“We did what we needed to do in that dual and we’re going to see those guys a lot of times this year,” Clarke coach Brian Reece said. “They’re in a lot of our meets. It’s good to start against them and see where we need to go.”

The Indians had ultra-competitive matches during the Southwest Valley dual, including matchups that included Max Maiden (106 pounds) and Jacob Smith (182).

Carter and Colby Wilken at 120 and 138 pounds respectively, both finished 3-0, as did senior Parker Hardy at 126. Each registered a pin in the win over Southwest Valley.

“I’d really like to see Parker and Colby get a little more aggressive on their feet and they know that. We’ve had that conversation,” Reece said. “They just need to start trusting themselves a little bit more.”

Jon Bair was also 2-1 with two pins.

GREENFIELD — Saturday’s Coach Riley Invitational at Nodaway Valley provided the Indians another formidable day of opponents.

The Wilkens both placed second, as did Domina at 132 pounds. Bair picked up third at 170.

The team heads to Albia tonight (Thursday) for a quad with the hosts, as well as Chariton and Moravia.
