James Albert Penick, 90, of Osceola died Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at his home.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., in Osceola with the Rev. Marty Burgus officiating. Interment followed in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation with family present was from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Clarke County Animal Shelter or Veteran Association. James Albert Penick, son of Nathan White Penick and Mae Maryann (Edwards) Penick, was born Aug. 18, 1927, in Chariton. Jim grew up in the Lucas area. He served in the U.S. Army from February 1946 to August 1947, serving in the Philippines and Korea before his honorable discharge Aug. 24, 1947.
On Sept. 28, 1947, he married Jean Marie Baker in Osceola. Jim was co-owner of J & J Auto Service for many years. Jean and Jim later moved to their farm, and Jim farmed for many years. They returned to town in the early 2000s where they have lived since.
Jim is survived by his wife of 70 years, Jean Marie Penick of Osceola; sons, James L. (Connie) Penick of Osceola, Kenneth (Marilyn) Penick of Murray and Rick (Kristy) Penick of Ellston; grandchildren, Kelli (Jim) Coombs of Osceola, Nick (friend Tiffany) Penick of Osceola, Courtney (Trent) Denney of Osceola, Manda (Colter) Wright of Osceola, Dustin (Gaby) Penick of Murray, Drew (Rebekah) Penick of New Braunfels, Texas, Jerad (Amy) Penick of Ankeny, Jacob Penick of Council Bluffs and Jesse Penick of Mount Ayr; 17 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Mae and Nathan Penick; daughter Peggy Penick and nine brothers and sisters.
