Frank Townsend, 91, of Ankeny died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny.
Per his wishes, Frank has been cremated and memorial services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., in Osceola with interment and military rites following at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola. Memorial contributions may be directed to Osceola Eagles Lodge No. 3495 or Osceola V.F.W. Frank Edward Townsend, son of Virgil Edward Townsend and Ethel Mae Baker Townsend, was born March 28, 1926, in Osceola. Frank received his education in Clarke County schools. Frank served his country with the United States Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class.
On May 30, 1948, Frank married Betty Mateer. Frank and Betty spent nearly 51 years of marriage together before she died in 1999.
On Aug. 25, 2002, Frank married Doris Mongar in Osceola. Frank spent his working life in heavy equipment, operating his own business, Townsend Construction for many years. He began working with Clayton Mateer and eventually sold the grading business to Donnie Goodrich in 1997. Frank continued to help Donnie occasionally until he was nearly 87.
Frank was a member of Osceola Eagles Lodge No. 3495 and V.F.W. in Osceola.
Frank is survived by his wife Doris Townsend of Osceola; son Clayton (Laurie) Townsend of Germantown, Maryland; daughters, Debra (Gregory) Culbertson of Elkton, Maryland, and Sharon (Kevin Burns) Smith of Ankeny; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 17 stepchildren, 34 step grandchildren, 56 step great-grandchildren, 12 step great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and many friends.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Betty J. Townsend; brother Virgil Dean Townsend and sister Leora Siefkas.
