MARTENSDALE — After leading the majority of Tuesday's (Nov. 21) season opener at Martensdale-St. Marys, Clarke girls hoops lost the lead for the first time in the game when Skylyr Stewart knocked down a triple with just under three minutes remaining in the game.

Two Morgan Dunn free throws made it a 43-39 Blue Devils advantage with 2:15 to go in the fourth.

Clarke followed with a CeJay Blakely assist to an open Megan Linskens on the wing for triple, and two Sarah Davis free throws for a 44-43 lead in what ended up a 52-47 win.

“When I was a freshman and a sophomore, my purpose on the team was to shoot three’s whenever I could. Whenever I’m open I take the shot," Davis said.

Davis finished the game tied for a game high with 15 points and knocked down three 3-pointers.

“She’s (Davis) been working hard on her three’s," coach Christa Subbert said after picking up her first victory as head coach. "She’s stayed after practice a lot to get some extra shooting in and it has paid off. Hopefully she can keep having that consistency.”

Linskens added on two more free throws, which received an answer in a Grace Hart runner for Martensdale to make the lead one again.

The Indians and Blue Devils traded turns with a bucket each, before two Deseree Stubbe free throws clinched the win. Stubbe also finished with 15 points and added eight rebounds.

Ashlynn Oehlert was most productive on the defensive boards, as she grabbed 16 of Clarke's 36 rebounds.

Megan Linskens, who notched 11 points, was also big down the stretch.

“We’ve been working really hard in practice recently," Davis noted. "Kaitlyn (Halsband) stepped up being our post player because we don’t have many post girls.”

Kiaya Dunbar was another freshman who joined the contingent of juniors who played for Clarke.

It took the effort of numerous Indians to fend off the Blue Devils as Clarke pulled the game out in a thrilling fourth quarter.

“We played as a team. Everybody did their part," Subbert said. "They had their own roles and everybody came together in a tough situation.”
