Excellent hurdle running leads Lady Indians at SCC meet

handful of top finishes for boys

KNOXVILLE — Clarke’s girls track and field team continues to do exceptionally well in the hurdle events.

The Lady Indians fared well there in the South Central Conference meet Thursday in Knoxville.

The shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Solanna Zimmerman, Hollie Miler, Ashlynn Oehlert and Bailey Zimmerman claimed first in 1:13.27.

The Zimmerman sisters were at the top of the 100 hurdles. Bailey Zimmerman won in 16.19, while Solanna Zimmerman was third in 16.59.

The 4x100-meter relay quartet of Solanna Zimmerman, Caitlyn Clark, Sarah Davis and Bailey Zimmerman took third.

Clarke’s girls finished fifth with 42 points.

Albia was the league champion with 162 points. Knoxville was the runner-up with 132 points, while Davis County took third with 122 points.

The performance, however, had areas the Lady Indians can improve up, particularly before races.

“We looked a little stiff on Thursday,” said Clarke coach Christa Subbert. “We need to do a better job of getting warmed up and being ready to run when the race starts.”

Injuries continue to be an issue for the Lady Indians. Several were held out in preparation for Thursday’s state qualifying meet at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

“We held a few girls back so they could rest up and be ready for districts next week,” Subbert said.

The state qualifying meet will pose strong tests for the Lady Indians looking to advance events to next week’s state meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

“The state qualifying meet will be tough for us. We are in a good district,” Subbert said. “The goal each track season is obviously to do well in conference and make it to state. We have some good opportunities, and I’m excited to see what my girls can do Thursday. Hopefully we will get a few state qualifiers.”

A young Clarke boys track and field team team learned much from Thursday’s South Central Conference track and field meet.

The Indians placed sixth with 45.33 points.

Leading the charge was Byron Rivera’s third-place finish in the high jump and Humberto Arellano's third in the 200-meter dash, along with Brian Avalos taking third in the long jump.

The 4x100-meter relay quartet of Payton Winship, Rivera, Arellano and Avalos finished fourth to lead the relays.

Amanuel Fry was fourth in the 400 hurdles.

Arellano was fifth in the 400, Grant Wishon was fifth in the discus, with Rivera placing fifth in the 100-meter dash, and Payton Winship fifth in both the long jump and high jump.

Wishon is the lone senior on a youthful Indians team.

“The biggest takeaway is that we were most likely the youngest team there with only one senior and nine freshman,” said Clarke boys coach Kyle Eckerman.

Growth will happen as the boys mature physically.

“The next couple of years, we will be more competitive as team,” Eckerman said.

Albia won the team title narrowly over Knoxville. The Demons scored 149 points to the Panthers’ 141 points. Davis County was third with 76.67 points.
