Alzheimer’s Association and Lakeside Casino Resort host ‘Approaching Alzheimer’s’

EMS provider/ First Responder training

More than 5 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States and the epidemic continues to grow. To help ensure the safety of individuals and families, it’s critical that EMS providers and all first responders are knowledgeable about the disease and its effects. People with Alzheimer’s and other dementias can come in contact with those responding to an emergency when they become lost, unknowingly break the law or when due to agitation, they put themselves or others in danger. Understanding the disease and how to best approach these situations can help ensure the right response.

With input from first responders, the Alzheimer's Association® developed the Approaching Alzheimer's: EMS Provider / First Responder Training. This course prepares individuals to identify the disease and efficiently and effectively respond to common calls involving a person with dementia.

EMS providers and all first responders from across the state are encouraged to attend this class, scheduled for Monday, May 22, 2017 at Lakeside Casino Resort in Osceola from 5:30 – 9 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes: course material, dinner provided by Lakeside Casino, and CEUs (3.0 EMS and 0.3 nursing education credits provided by SWCC in Creston).

Registration is required by visiting alz.org/greateriowa or by calling 800.272.3900.

For questions regarding the class, please contact Alzheimer’s Association Program Specialist, Susan Callison at scallison@alz.org or 515.218.2680.
