Infrared saunas: safety and benefits

The new sauna at Earth Angels does more than make people sweat. Owner Sherry Hall chose a modern sauna to take advantage of the new, advanced features they offer.

The Sunlighten system provides users with a variety of health services, along with entertainment options and the ability for the sauna to be cleaned quickly and thoroughly.

“There’s preset health programs in here,” she said, pointing out the touchscreen display. “It depends on what you want to do.”

Unlike a traditional steam sauna, the unit Hall purchased relies on infrared heat. Lights are used to warm your body vs. warming the air, leading to a cooler environment and less sweat.

“You don’t need the heat,” said Hall. “The infrared rays are still doing their thing. The heat is just kind of a byproduct.”

According to Dr. Brent Bauer, director of the Department of Internal Medicine’s Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic, the infrared technology used in the saunas are safe and small studies on their effectiveness show promise.

It also have features built-in to stave off boredom.

“You can come over here to Media — you can get on Facebook if you want to. It’s all connected wirelessly,” said Hall.

The sauna’s glass doors and mock bamboo surface are perfect for a relaxing 20 to 40 minute session, but that’s as long as is recommended.

“You can use up to 40 minutes a session,” emphasized Hall.

The new sauna will be available during Earth Angels’ Friday and Saturday open house.
