Emanuel Rios chosen for Erie community school pilot program

Sonia Emanuel Rios, formerly of Osceola, was chosen as one of five community school directors for a public school pilot program in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 10. Competing against 200 other candidates, Emanuel Rios started on Tuesday.

As one of five new CSDs in the Erie school system, she is helping create lasting education reform that might one day bridge the socio-economic gaps that plague public education.

Through the community education pilot program, a collaboration between Erie’s public schools and the United Way of Erie County, Emanuel Rios will help families with children at McKinley Elementary in Erie, Pennsylvania, have easier access to community services. The program places a director in public school to focus on issues like adequate food, shelter and clothing, while the principal’s attention stays on academic success.
