Accident

Scott Wayne Carter, 58, of Murray was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury and operating while under the influence after an accident 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the intersection of Highway 34 and 130th Street.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff report, witnesses at the scene said a dark-colored pick-up was traveling south on 130th Street when it went through the intersection, making contact to the rear of a 2000 Ford driven east on Highway 34 by Holly Ann Crall, 39, of Norwalk. Crall’s vehicle rolled multiple times, ejecting a rear passenger who was not wearing a seat belt, and resulting in serious injury to at least one other occupant.

Crall and the rear passenger were transported by air ambulances to Des Moines hospitals.

At the point of impact, the pick-up lost its license plate, allowing Iowa State Patrol officers to identify and locate Carter. Officers went to Carter’s residence, observed a damaged 1997 Ford in the driveway and spoke with Carter, who admitted to and showed signs of intoxication.

Carter admitted to drinking earlier in the day. The officer administered standardized field sobriety tests, which Carter failed. Carter failed a preliminary breath test and was placed under arrest. At Clarke County Jail, his blood-alcohol content registered at .144.

Carter was being held on $5,000 bond.

Damage estimates are $4,000 to Carter’s vehicle and $10,000 to Crall’s vehicle.

Clarke County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Osceola Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Clarke County EMS and Murray and Osceola fire departments.
