Meyer learns plenty at state golf tournament

Central Decatur junior Lukas Meyer took away plenty from his two days of playing at the Class 1A boys state golf tournament May 27-28 at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Meyer placed 51st with a two-day total of 194, carding rounds of 91 and 103.

“It’s a very good experience for me to come up here and play a good course,” Meyer said.

Meyer learned a lot over the two day, lessons he can take back to his team.

“You have to stay relaxed, hit the ball real solid,” he said.

Meyer is only the fourth Central Decatur player to ever make state.

“Qualifying for him and his family is a big deal,” said Central Decatur coach Gary Hayworth. “He had a good weekend. He enjoyed it and his family enjoyed it.”

Meyer played solid the first day, but struggled early on the second day.

“He played really well the first day,” Hayworth said. “He started real round but bounced back.”

Meyer’s finish at state sets the tone for next year.

“We’ve never qualified for a team. With everybody back next year, we’ve got a shot,” Meyer said.
