New Webster Funeral Home opening

The new Webster Funeral Home on South Main Street was completed in 1929.

Lester B. Webster inaugurated chapel funeral services, a new service to Clarke County, keeping in step with progress in his profession and dedicating to the service of the county. It was a beautiful institution.

Sparing neither expense nor effort, he built a funeral home to rank with the best and most beautiful in this state. The chapel was built with a seating capacity of approximately 175.

The walls were finished to give relief effect of a rough finish and lights and fixtures were harmonized perfectly. The chapel was indeed a beautiful room.

A heavy carpet covered the floor and rich, wine red drapes propped by “harp” doors. An inclined walk lead to the hearse and family car in a built-in garage directly off the chapel.

The new funeral home was built especially for the handling of funerals and designed by Webster.

Its construction did away with all the confusion, as was sometimes evident at church and home funerals.

A three day grand opening was open to the public. The chairs for the chapel were missing at the opening because of a delay at the factory, but Webster hoped to have two on hand to show how the chapel would be furnished.

Two generations of Webster and Son have served Clarke County. Lester B. Webster followed the footsteps of his father in the profession and continued to give improvements in the profession to the community.

The building of the Webster Funeral Home was the greatest improvement of all and Webster intended it as permanent memorial to the Webster name.
