Eightieth anniversaries

1935 — The present Osceola Post Office was built.

1935 — The West Side Tavern was built by Manis McDougal, Tom Lingle and Gerald (Jake) McDougal.

1935 — The Lyric Theatre was built by John Waller.

These three businesses have each continued as such at their same location for 80 years.

Jan. 1, 1935 — Clarke County State Bank was given authority by the State of Iowa Office of Superintendent of Banking to transact business of a state bank. The bank has operated at locations on South Main Street.

January 1935 — Clarence D. Friday and C. Fred Carlson purchased Clyde Johnson Insurance agency. Noel Friday joined Friday Insurance in 1957.

1935 — HyVee opened a store on the south side of the square as one of its first stores, moving to the present location in 1959.

Oct. 15, 1933 — Richard A. Robinson commenced business buying a variety store. Robinson’s has remained in operation on South Main Street for 82 years.

The newspaper is the oldest business commencing July 30, 1859.
