Mary Unrein Sterling, Colo.

Mary K. Unrein, 88, of Sterling, Colorado, passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, in Sterling.

Visitation was from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Tennant Funeral Home, 330 S. Second St., in Sterling. Recitation of the Rosary was 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.  Mass of Christian burial followed at 10 a.m. with Father Michael Bodzioch celebrating.  Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.

Mary was born on March 20, 1927, to Gerald James and Katherine White James in Hopeville. She graduated from high school in 1944 and taught in a rural Iowa school for two years. During the summer, she worked in the country grocery store. She married Walter Unrein in Grand River on Sept. 11, 1946. They left for Colorado that day.

Mary was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Joan of Arc Circle, Legion of Mary for 40 years, the Funeral Dinner Committee and St. Anthony’s Choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walt; her parents; two infant brothers; son Vincent and grandson Matt Montgomery.

She is survived by Mike (Kay) and family of Eaton, Colorado, Kit Kruger and family of Sterling, Colorado, Mark (Connie) of Sterling, Colorado, Jay (Debbie) of Sterling, Colorado, David (Kim) and family of Sterling, Colorado, Peter and family of Morrill, Nebraska, Kim Roth and family of Sterling, Colorado; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; brothers, Paul and Leota James of Murray, Alfred and Velda James of Urbandale, William and Cherie James of Waterloo and Martin and Pat James of St. Charles, Missouri; and sister Martha and Gene Kraber of West Des Moines.
