Driving safely during the fall season

Fall is just around the corner as we have been reminded with some nice cool days and very cool nights. The full moon is also a reminder of the harvest coming soon. But, this is also a dangerous time for all Iowa motorists.

Our “hurry here,” “hurry there” society seems to lend itself to frustration too easily, especially when things get in our way. And, when you combine all that rushing with folks trying to get that bit of important information texted to whoever, or checking up on Facebook while behind the wheel? You have a recipe for disaster.

School has started and many kids are excited to be reunited with their schoolmates and get back into a structured day, where they know what’s coming next. It’s no time to be distracted behind the wheel. Everyone — student drivers and adults — need to be extra cautious as school, work and harvest all combine to bring danger to Iowa roads this fall.

Children may mindlessly wander onto a busy road or highway without thinking to look both ways. If you’re busy texting or speeding, you may not see the kids, tractors, wagons, combines and trucks traveling from field to farm during harvest. That equipment moves at a snail’s pace, slowing traffic, which can’t be helped — but safety can.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Drivers need to slow down, leave for school or work a bit earlier and keep your eyes on the road and off your phone. This isn’t the time to get antsy when a farmer is moving his equipment on the roadway – they have been doing that for generations and it’s a part of growing up in rural Iowa.

Besides, I think we can all agree that what farmers are transporting is important to us all in the food chain. Parents – remind your kids to practice safety at home and away. Fall is a great time to practice patience and appreciate our farmers. Opening your eyes and enjoying the beauty of the season and respecting the safety challenges around you is a good place to start.
