CRESTON —The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) agricultural department is hosting the Iowa State University Extension’s Three-State Beef Conference 5:30 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the SWCC ag site, north of the college’s Creston campus.
Three-State Beef Conference topics and speakers are based on producer input. Rick Rasby, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will present “Evaluating Supplementation Strategies,” discussing detailed documentation that explains the benefits to calves from the supplementation of cows on low quality forage during pregnancy. Rasby will help participants think through positive and negative associative benefits of supplements.
Bruce Anderson, University of Nebraska, will present “Rethinking our Forage Systems.” Anderson completed his PhD in 1980, and he’s been helping producers optimize the use of their forage for decades. With high pasture rental rates, there isn’t forage to waste.
Patrick Gunn, Iowa State University, will present “Financial Impacts of Fertility and Infertility in the Current Cattle Market,” focusing on high prices for calves providing both the means and an incentive for expansion of herds. According to Gunn, returns are based on calves being born to those new heifers and cows joining the herd.
Pre-registration, by Jan. 9, is required for the Three-State Beef Conference. The registration fee is $25, which includes a meal and materials. The Three-State Beef Conference was designed in 1980 to give beef cattle interests in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska a regular update on current cow-calf and stocker topics.
