FFA members attend district conference

Each year, the South Central District and Iowa FFA officers plan and facilitate Greenhand Fire Up Conferences for FFA members in the south central district.

Indianola High School welcomed FFA chapters from all over the south central district Oct. 9. Sixteen new members from the Osceola chapter attended the leadership conference.

While at Indianola High School, the 16 students participated in four interactive workshops for first year high school FFA members, also known as Greenhands, for the annual Greenhand Fire-Up Conference. The workshops facilitated were leadership focused in the areas of communications, managing priorities, SMART goals and authenticity.

Kaitlyn Boyer, South Central District Reporter and Osceola Big Chief FFA Officer, said “Greenhand Fire-Up Camp is a great event that gets FFA members excited about FFA. They get to meet other FFA members while strengthening their leadership skills. I had a blast facilitating one of the workshops.”

This year, the officers prepared and facilitated workshops of communication, managing priorities, SMART goals, and authenticity – in order to provide the first-year FFA members with skills they would use both within and outside of FFA. The goal was to engage FFA members in learning about the tools that would allow them to be successful in anything they are part of through high school and beyond.

Osceola Big Chief Chapter officers had a team goal to increase freshman membership by 15 people. The goal was met and exceeded, adding 25 new members to the chapter

Iowa FFA Association has 219 local chapters with over 14,300 FFA members. FFA is a national organization of more than 610,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in science, business and technology of agriculture.

Local, state and national programs provide opportunities for students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. FFA’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
