Wear Pink Day planned this week

This is a proclamation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which was signed by Mayor Fred Diehl.

“Whereas, in 2014, 124 of Iowa women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 22 will die from the disease.

Whereas, early detection could spare as many as a third of those lives. But, research shows that only a small percentage of women in Iowa are getting screening mammograms in accordance with nationally-accepted guidelines.

Whereas, the American Cancer Society recommends screening for breast cancer, including routine mammography, examination by a physician and monthly breast self-examination.

Therefore, in recognition of the important, life saving early detection practices available for breast cancer, I do hereby proclaim the month of October 2014 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Oct. 24, 2014 as Wear Pink Day.

In doing so, I encourage all women in Clarke County to become aware they are at risk, and to check with their health care providers to see whether they should get a mammogram. I also urge each and every resident of Clarke County to make sure the women they care about get screened.

In testimony whereof, I have here unto set my hand and cause the seal of the city of Osceola to be affixed Oct. 21, 2014.”
