The new school year begins

Welcome back to school! Clarke Elementary is excited to share some changes and exciting news happening in our building.

On the outside, you will notice a new retaining wall and wood chips on the primary playground. The staff is appreciative of the parking lot’s increased size and the sidewalk. Inside you will notice new paint in the cafeteria and new piping project in the primary end for cooling/heating.

Our preschool serves 4-year-olds at The Village. Currently, we have about 65 students enrolled. Each classroom is served by two certified teachers. We only get funding for students enrolled by Oct. 1, so if you are considering Clarke Preschool, please get enrolled soon so we can have funding for our full time teachers in the future. The first day of preschool is August 25.

Our transitional kindergarten program has moved into the elementary building. We are excited to offer a full day experience including related arts to our youngest learners. Transitional kindergarten students follow the K-12 calendar starting Aug. 18.

Another change this year is for the oldest students served in our building. Our sixth-graders will travel with their home room from teacher to teacher in what we call departmentalized style. This means that each teacher focuses on a content area. This allows a teacher to become a content expert in the areas of math, science, social studies, reading and writing.

On August 26, the elementary is sponsoring a “Begin With the End in Mind: Leadership Journey ‘14-’15.” This is a chance for families to come in to the school to learn more about each classroom. Teachers will sit down and explain how their room operates to families. Families can ask questions and learn more about how we must all work together to help our students grow in all areas.

Instrument display night is Aug. 28 in the elementary school cafeteria at 7 p.m. Rieman Music will be there rent out instruments, as well as offer lesson books, reeds, oil and stands for families to purchase. Information will be shared, as well about the band program. Please join us.

Please note the school calendar. Every Wednesday we will dismiss from the elementary at 2:05 (followed by MS/HS dismissal). Staff will be participating in collaborative meetings focused on assessment, curriculum and student needs during these early dismissals.
