D. Roger Gilbert (65) Osceola, Ia
A good man died on July 18th, 2014. A humble man who had no idea how many people’s lives he touched. Not rich by the world’s standard, but so rich in family’s love and friends. David Roger Gilbert, known as Roger to all, was born March 13, 1949 in Leon, Iowa, to Mildred Brenizer Gilbert and Arthur Gilbert.
He was married on July 18, 1970, to Gerry Hays. Together they established a loving home where all were welcome. Throughout their life together many relatives and friends of theirs and their children were guests in their home. Everyone was considered family, the door was always open.
Roger was well known through the area as an excellent horseman. Any number of other ranchers would bring wounded or ill horses for him to work on. His passion, after his devotion to his family, was to his horses. He took pride in the establishment of Gilbert Quarter Horses/Lone Oak Stables.
Roger ran several businesses in Clarke County, Gilbert Welding, which he operated for over 15 years. He also had a used car business. All of this was carried on along with his horse and farming operation.
One example of the love his children was the gift of a yellow and white ‘57 Chevy. The car of his youth. Even during his illness he loved to drive it to town for people to admire and appreciate.
Roger is survived by the love of his life, Gerry Gilbert. He and Gerry are the proud parents of five children, two sons and three daughters as well as a very special foster son: Michael (Stephanie) Gilbert, Gregory (Susan) Gilbert, Diane Gilbert Carney (Dave Carney) all of Osceola, Lori Gilbert of Granger, Beth (Jeff) Kurth of Osceola and Brian Rubendall of Madrid.
Roger always considered his grandchildren to be a special blessing from God. He always enjoyed spending time with them. Their grandchildren are Hayley and Paige Gilbert, Gregory Jr. and Savannah Gilbert, Taylor and Jace Gilbert, Layla Carney, Joshlynn and David Owen Clark, Stevie and Elliana Kurth, Janae, Rylan and Koltyn Rubendall.
Roger was the seventh of eight children. He is survived by sisters Sharon Phipps and Marlene McCaulley, brothers Duane (Margaret) Gilbert, Larry (Julie) Gilbert, Steve (Rose) Gilbert and David (Sheryl) Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Joyce Gilbert Dornack and Barbara Gilbert Meislahn and three brother-in-laws Benny McCaulley, Al Meislahn, and Dick Phillips.
