Karen Roberts, 71, of Bedford died May 25, 2014, at her home.
Celebration of life services were 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at Bedford United Methodist Church. Ritchie Funeral Home, 1406 Madison Ave., Bedford, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given in Karen’s name. Online condolences may be left at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com.
Karen Ann Rops, daughter of Pearl and George Rops, was born Nov. 23, 1942, in Parkersburg.
Her mother married Don Mitchell and the family lived in Evansdale.
Karen graduated from East High School in Waterloo in 1960.
On May 28, 1961, Karen married John Roberts.
They resided in LaPorte City, while Karen was a nurses aide. They moved to a farm south of Shell Rock. Then, they purchased a dairy farm near Highlandville.
Karen worked at North Winneshiek School as a board secretary. Karen purchased the Armory Bookstore in Decorah. The family moved again, and she was board secretary at Clarke Community School and finally at Marion School District.
In 1990, Karen and John moved to Bedford to run an embroidery factory.
Karen ended her working career at State Savings Bank in Bedford.
Karen is survived by her daughters, Linda (husband Tom) Throckmorton, Susan (husband Jeremy) Swartz and Nancy (husband James) Murphy; grandchildren, Nicholas Throckmorton, Caila and Haley Raymond, Noah McBride, Kyla and Dalton Swartz, Devon and Madison McBride and Max and Samantha Murphy; brothers, Lee (wife Linda) Rops, Paul (wife Janet) Rops and Gary Mitchell; sisters, Roseann (husband Mike) Spooner and Pam (husband Dan) Schmitz; sister-in-law Marguerite Shreve; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband, parents; brothers, Charles Mitchell and Larry Mitchell; and father- and mother-in-law, Earl and Pauline Roberts.
