Patton, McKinney medal at state

DES MOINES — The spectacular high school track and field careers of Murray's Kate Patton and Interstate 35's Holly McKinney came to a close here Saturday at the Co-ed State Track Meet.

In their final trip to the famed blue oval as a high school athlete, both Patton and McKinney earned a pair of medals.

Patton, who won four medals at last year's state track meet, repeated as a medalist in the 100 meters and the 200 meters.

"I feel pretty happy, I guess," Patton said. "I never could break 12.5 or 25.5, which is what I ran last year, but I'm still pretty happy."

Patton ran 12.86 in Saturday's finals of the 100 meter dash, .44 seconds behind winner Katie Maschmann of Montezuma.

In the 200 meter dash, Patton took third in 26.32.

"Eveything was kind of normal," she said. "I always feel pretty relaxed up here, since I've been here since I was a freshman. I know what to expect. Again, I was slow out of the blocks. I think once I get that down, I'll be good. I'm just always playing catch-up."

Still, ending her career with a pair of medals at the state track meet was an honor for Patton.

"It feels good," she said. "I got four last year, but it feels great to come back and compete again. Just being here is an honor for me."

Meanwhile, Interstate 35 senior Holly McKinney had a busy weekend running the distance triple.

McKinney finished eighth in Thursday's Class 2A 3,000 meters, running a 17-second personal best time of 11:00.96, breaking the Interstate 35 school record in the event.

"I wanted to PR, definitely," McKinney said. "I was seeded 17th and I knew I could do what it takes to get top eight and get that medal."

Saturday morning kicked off with McKinney running another personal best in the 800 meters. She finished 13th overall in 2:25.94.

She capped her weekend with perhaps her best race of the meet, running a 15-second personal best in the 1,500 meters to finish fifth in 4:56.45.

"I can't believe it, really," McKinney said. "It's what I've been working toward all my four seasons. This is my last high school race ever, so I wanted to make it a good one. It can't be a bad one on this track."

McKinney spent the early portions of the race in third place, before falling all the way to eighth. But, she used a strong final lap to surge her way into fifth.

"I just thought to myself, 'Can you do this? Can you push that much harder?'" she said. "So I went for it. Just as always, glory to God and thanks to my teammates and family for all of their support."

Patton and McKinney will be teammates in college next year for the Central College track and field team.
