Lela Hopkins New Virginia

Lela Hopkins, 86, of New Virginia died May 22, 2014, at Norwalk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Osceola. The Rev. Larry Owens officiated. Interment was in New Virginia Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to New Virginia Fire and Rescue. Online condolences may be left at www.kalefuneralhome.com.

Lela Mae Montgomery, daughter of Edna (Decker) and William Montgomery, was born March 24, 1928, in New Virginia, Warren County.

Lela grew up on farms near New Virginia and attended New Virginia schools, where she graduated from New Virginia High School in 1946.

Lela moved to Osceola soon after graduation to work at Snowden’s garment factory.

On Dec. 24, 1949, Lela married Carl Roy Hopkins in Osceola.

They made their home in Osceola for a few months before moving to Des Moines in 1950, where Carl was employed for about one year. They then moved to farm in Grand River for a year or so. Then, in 1953, they moved to New Virginia, where they resided for the next 60 years.

Lela was a stay-at-home mother until 1964, when she began working at the New Virginia School in the lunch kitchen. She worked 26 years at the school, until her retirement in 1990.

Prior to becoming residents at Vintage Hills Retirement Community in January, Carl and Lela lived at their home on Grand Avenue in New Virginia for 56 years.

Lela is survived by her children, David (Nancy) Hopkins of St. Peters, Mo., Danny (Patsy) Hopkins of Rosenberg, Texas, and Randy (Jayne) of Indianola; grandchildren, Shawn (Jennifer) Hopkins of St. Ann, Mo., Daysha Hopkins of Rosenberg, Texas, Jason Hopkins of O’Fallon, Mo., Jerome Hopkins of Rosenberg, Texas, Amy (Grant) Bush of New Virginia, Angela (Bobby) Wittenauer of St. Peters, Mo., Tyler Hopkins of Des Moines and Jesse Huggins of Issaquah, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Eli Hopkins, Lela Hopkins, Alex and Anthony Hopkins, Jaylen, Kylie and Kaden Bush, Rayann Otto and Cody Wittenauer; sisters-in-law, Betty Montgomery, Mildred Hutcheson, Marjorie Black, Arleta Palmer and Kathy Hopkins; brother-in-law Harry (Billie) Hopkins; along with a host of other family members, friends and acquaintances.

Lela was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Darrell; brothers, Dale and Glen Montgomery; sister Freda Carrico; sister-in-law Shirley Montgomery; and brothers-in-law, Dean Carrico, Don Hopkins, Dean Hutcheson, Marvin Black and Frank Palmer.
