Opal Schaffer, 90, of Osceola died May 4, 2014, at Clarke County Hospital.
Services were 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Shane Simpson officiated. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Opal Marie Schaffer, daughter of Mattie Ann (McWilliams) and Chauncey Evart Horton, was born July 28, 1923, in Decatur County.
Opal began her working career teaching country school for five years. Opal and Don started the first taxi service in Leon in the early 1950s, before moving to Osceola.
Opal worked several years as cook and as head cook at East Elementary. She later worked as the food service supervisor at the Clarke County Hospital, for several years, until her retirement.
Opal is survived by her daughters, Karen Marie (Roger H.) Stickler of Overland Park, Kan., and Karyl Ann (Roger E.) Hartzler of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Jan L. (Kyong Cha) Stickler of Federal Way, Wash., Dawn R. Stickler of Aurora, Colo., Shane L. (Jenny) Hartzler of Marion, Chad E. Hartzler of Thornton, Colo., and Heather M. (Tommy) Steele of Phelan, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon, Nathan, Justin, Quentin, Hunter, Lauren, Xavier, Shea, Elli, Emma, Grace, Jaden, Skyler and Teagan; and great-great-grandchild Adrian; brother-in-law Norman Schaffer of Crossville, Tenn., sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schaffer of Woodridge, Ill., and Dorotha Horton of Osceola; as well as a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Cora King, brother-in-law Louis King, brother Don S. Horton, sister Carrie Davenport; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Kenneth Davenport, Burl Schaffer, Opal B. Schaffer, Kenneth Schaffer, Doris Schaffer, Robert Schaffer, Vivian Hanson, Wayne Hanson, Marian Mericle, Robert Mericle and Ellen Schaffer.
