Earl ‘Buck’ Mason Osceola
Earl "Buck" Mason, 81, of Osceola died April 13, 2014, at Southern Hills Specialty Care.
Memorial services were 2 p.m. Friday, April 18, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Chuck DeVos officiated. Interment of his cremains was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Online condolences may be left at www.kalefuneralhome.com.
Earl LeRoy "Buck" Mason, son of Hilda Olivia (Hagen) and Fredrick Earl Mason, was born Jan. 1, 1933, in Osceola.
Buck grew up in Osceola. He helped around his father’s mechanic shop.
In his late teen years, Buck's family moved to Weldon, where they had a mechanic shop at the Weldon Corner, which they later moved to town.
Buck became a well-known mechanic throughout the racing community, which lead him to welding jobs at Solars Aircraft and Massey Ferguson, both in Des Moines. He retired from manufacturing in 1980. This gave him time to reopen the mechanic shop in Weldon, where he continued for several years.
In 1954, Buck married Mary Lou Hoffman. They lived in Weldon for many years.
Later, in 1970, Buck married Kathryn Pearcy.
Buck was a member of Weldon First Christian Church, Weldon Masonic Lodge and supported St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Buck is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Jeff) Norman of Osceola and Pam (Joe) Sitzman of Woodburn; son Brent (Sarah) Mason of Clinton, Mo.; daughter-in-law Kelly (Gerry) Mason Milne of Warroad, Minn.; grandchildren, Kyra (Jordan) Brownlee of Osceola, Carlee (Gerry) Milne of Altoona, Sara (Nathan) Sleyster of Norwalk, Terri (Phil) Rater of Altoona, Breana Sitzman of Osceola, Joey (Melissa) Sitzman of Osceola, Tony Sitzman of Woodburn, Jill (Shane) Taylor of Osceola and McKenna and Xavier Mason of Clinton, Mo.; great-grandchildren, Teegin and Braxton Brownlee of Osceola, Ella and Benjamin Sleyster of Norwalk, Parker, Hannah and Carter Rater of Altoona, Shayla and JD Sitzman of Osceola and Cooper and Zoey Taylor of Osceola; sisters, Mabel Pack and Darlene Carns, both of Wichita, Kan.; brother-in-law George Adams of Fort Madison; and many other relatives and friends.
Buck was preceded in death by his parents, son Chris Mason, brother Raymond Mason; sisters, Margery Curtis Wilhite and Dorothy Adams; and brother-in-laws, Glen Curtis, Don Pack, Jim Carns and Cecil Wilhite.
