Richard Spencer


Richard “Dick” Carl Spencer, age 86 of Albia, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Oakwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albia.

Dick was born December 14, 1927, to John Earl and Wreatha (Pence) Spencer south of Albia in Hilton, IA. He married JoAnn Curtis on October 30, 1955, at the Christian Church in Ottumwa. They shared 55 years of marriage together before her passing on February 18, 2011.

Dick graduated from Albia High School in 1948. He owned and operated Spencer Dairy and did contract work for Wapello Dairy until they closed in the early 70’s. He then worked for Meadow Gold until 1977 when he was in an automobile accident, but still helped on the family farm.

Dick was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, was on the Monroe County Fair Board; and past president of the Albia Booster Club. He was very involved with William Penn University and even helped drive the bus for the girls’ basketball team for many years. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball, farming, working, and having coffee with the boys at Hardee’s.

He also loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dick is survived by two sons, Dr. Richard (Laurie) Spencer of Osceola and Ron (Sandy) Spencer of Albia; five grandchildren, John (Emily) Spencer of Albia, Stacy (Tim) Haas of Albia, Catherine (Zach) Reinhart of Ames, Amy (Rob) Attridge of Durrus, Ireland, and Richard Dean Spencer of Ames; three great grandchildren, Case Spencer, Katie Haas, and Eloise Reinhart; three siblings, Rosemary Thomas of Houston, TX, Coach Bob (Pat) Spencer of Des Moines, and Carol (Jack) Maberry of Bella Vista, AR; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a sister, Earlene Davis.

Memorial services were 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 18, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia; with Pastor Neil Montz officiating. Inurnment was in Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation was 2-8 p.m., Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia; with the family present from 5-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Monroe County Fair Grounds.
