Doris Redman Osceola

Doris Hazel Stark Redman passed from life on this earth on April 12, 2014 at Clarke Co. Hospital extended care unit where she received exceptional care from a loving and compassionate staff for the last five months of her life.

Doris was born on Nov. 5, 1917 in Doyle Township, Clarke County, Osceola, Ia., the sixth of seventeen children born to John Leslie and Esther Merle Cole Stark, granddaughter of Eli Wilbur and Sarah Frances Wilson Stark and Doc and Candace Adams Cole. She lived near Grand River, Leon, New Virginia and Osceola all her life, attended country schools through 8th grade and married Robert Eldon Redman on Dec. 30, 1936 at Des Moines, Ia.

She enjoyed her life as a hard working farm wife, raising chickens and cattle and tending a large garden. After Robert’s death on Jan. 29, 1991 she moved to Osceola where she continued to stay busy raising flowers, cleaning for several friends and helping them with errands and appointments and caring for friends in their homes until her health no longer allowed.

During her life on the farm she raised large flocks of chickens, selling eggs and dressed broilers, milking cows and selling cream, and tended a large garden and strawberry bed, always sharing the excess with family and friends. She enjoyed ceramics classes, collecting Avon, cooking and baking, sewing, making quilts, and refinished most of the furniture in her home. She treasured antique furniture and dishes from previous generations and those given to her by friends.

She taught herself to play a few songs on the piano when Larry and Connie were taking piano lessons, Rock of Ages being her favorite and taught herself to type when Connie was taking typing and shorthand classes in high school.

Doris belonged to Cheery Pal and Groveland Helpers neighborhood clubs and was a 50 year member of Ophir Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceeded in death by 15 brothers and sisters, Noel (Phyllis), Neil (Goldie), Oneta (Leonard) Redman, Roland LeRoy in infancy, Dale (Helen), Ruth (Leonard) Camp, Ruby, Edgar (Georgia), Bessie (Alfred Jr) Mason, Ellen (David) Peterson, Clifford, Donald (Nina), Marjorie (Gerald) Akes, JoAnn (Don) Brink, and Merlyn (Lois) and brother in law Earl Reasoner.
