Melvin Heckman St. Charles

Melvin F. Heckman, 78, of St. Charles died March 30, 2014, of acute myeloid leukemia at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial was in New Virginia Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.overtonfunerals.com.

Melvin Heckman, son of Ruby (Peterson) and William G. Heckman, was born July 14, 1935, in Anita.

Melvin served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed at Boeblinger, Germany, in the 595 Signal Support Company.

Melvin farmed for 30 years and worked for Warren County Secondary Road Department for 20 years, before retiring in 2000.

Melvin is survived by his wife Erma; children, Wendy Heckman, Wendell Heckman, Wanita (Jim) Steinberger and Wesley Heckman; daughter-in-law Valerie (Heckman) Kintz; brother Delbert (Joyce) Heckman; sister Norma Eberly; and grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan and Danielle Heckman, Grant and Garrett Heckman and Justin, Christina, Melinda and Trevor Steinberger; and many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Shirley Crawford and Ramona Reynolds Reed; son Winton and daughter-in-law Cynthia (Updike) Heckman.
