Carl Roy Hopkins, son of Nola (McDowell) and Roy Hopkins, was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Grand River, Decatur County.

He grew up on a farm near Grand River, where he attended country schools in the area and helped his father farm.

Carl entered the Navy in 1942, where he served as a diesel mechanic and electrician supervisor, mostly at a shore base in New Guinea during World War II.  While Carl was in New Guinea, he was transferred to the Marine Seabees because of their need for his diesel mechanic and electrician skills.

After discharge in 1945, Carl returned home to the family farm, where he helped his father with farming, until he was employed in Creston at a REA electric/light plant for a few years.

On Dec. 24, 1949, Carl married Lela Mae Montgomery in Osceola. They initially made their home in Osceola for a few months, before moving to Des Moines in 1950.

Carl was employed in Des Moines at Wood Brothers for about one year, before moving to farm in Grand River.

In 1953, he returned to work in Des Moines at Wood Brothers and later with Solar Aircraft. It was at this time they made their home in New Virginia.

He was then employed with Oliver Keller Electric of New Virginia, where he worked until 1962. He then began his 25-year career at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines as the supervisor of the electrical department. He retired from Iowa Methodist March 31, 1987, at 65 years of age.

Prior to becoming residents at Vintage Hills Retirement Community in January 2014, Carl and Lela lived at their home on Grand Avenue in New Virginia for 56 years.
