All-State musicians to go to New York
Claire Bertrand and Jenna Sandquist of Interstate 35 High School have attained the highest individual honors available to Iowa high-school musicians by being selected as members of the 2013 All-State Chorus.
This is Bertrand’s second year to be selected. Sandquist has been selected for her third consecutive year. Bertrand is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bertrand of St. Charles. Sandquist is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Sandquist of Truro. Both are vocal students of David Webster.
The 2013 Iowa All-State Music Festival will celebrate the 67th anniversary of this prestigious event. District auditions for the 281-piece All-State Band, 201-piece All-State Orchestra and 602-member All-State Chorus were held Saturday, Oct. 26, in Storm Lake, Hampton, Manchester, Harlan, Indianola and Fairfield.
Approximately 17 percent of the students who auditioned are selected for membership in the All-State ensembles. Participants will rehearse in Ames on Friday, Nov. 22, and Saturday, Nov. 23. the Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 P.M. in Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University in Ames Nov. 23.

This program is under the auspices of the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association.
Bertrand and Sandquist have also been selected as finalists for the Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York City, N.Y.
The Honors Performance Series showcases and honors the most talented individual student performers in high school today. Students rehearse and perform under master conductors and have the opportunity to perform before invited representatives from collegiate and professional music programs.
This year’s director is Dr. Lynne Gackle who is currently Associate Professor of Ensembles and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Baylor University, where she conducts the Baylor Bella Voce (Women’s Ensemble) and the Baylor Concert Choir, and teaches courses in choral literature and choral conducting.
The Honors Performance Series will take place Feb. 6-10. The concert is 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. For more information about this event, go to www.honorsperformance.org
