Edgar Shields Grand River

Edgar Shields, 84, of Grand River died Oct. 31, 2013, at Decatur County Hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Osceola. The Rev. Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Visitation with family present will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project. Oscar Edgar Shields, son of Pearle (Briner) and Nelson Shields, was born July 15, 1929, at home near Grand River.

Edgar received his education in various country schools, including Murray and Lorimor, and then attended Macksburg High School and graduated in 1947.

Edgar went on to serve during the Korean War with the United States Navy from 1951-1955 on the USS Talladega.

On Aug. 11, 1956, Edgar married Beth Larraine Hill.

Edgar farmed his entire life.

Edgar is survived by his wife Beth Shields of Grand River; sons, Howard (Nanette) Shields of Grand River, Francis (Debbie) Shields of Ellston, Alan (Vicky) Shields of Osceola, Willard (Becky) Shields of Creston and Ronald (Carol) Shields of Lamoni; sisters, Alice Herrold of Owasa, Cleone (Tom) Woughter of Grand River and Virginia (Stephen) Howard of Cheyenne, Wyo.; brother Joe (Ramadean) Shields of Grand River, brother-in-law Hugh Newton of Lewis, 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Edgar was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Betty Wetzler and Hazel Newton; brother Jack Shields; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Wetzler and Harvey Herrold; and sister-in-law Lucille Shields.
