James Connell Osceola

James Connell, 88, of Osceola died Oct. 13, 2013, at Southern Hills Specialty Care.

Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Julie M. Poore officiated. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to HCI Care Services in Osceola, Parkinson’s Association or Osceola United Methodist Church. Online condolences may be left at www.kalefuneralhome.com.

James Schlott Connell, son of Ruby (Schlott) and Smith A. Connell, was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Jim graduated from Perry High School. He attended New Mexico A&M University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Jim served during the World War II in the Army Air Corps.

On June 14, 1946, Jim married Phyllis Jeane Welty in Las Vegas, N.M.

Jim worked as an assistant county engineer of Jasper County from 1953-1958 and was Adair County engineer from 1958-1970 and Clarke County Engineer from 1970-1986. He was also a registered land surveyor.

Jim was a member of the Osceola Country Club.

Jim is survived by his wife Phyllis Connell of Osceola, daughter Janice (Roger) Shepard of Creston; grandchildren, Jodi (Brad) Goodale of Waterloo, Julie (David) Chumbley of Halbur, Jennifer (Shawn) James of Corning, Kati (Rob) Silliman of Afton and Jimmy Shepard of Creston; 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, other relatives and many friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Karen Joyce McCauley, granddaughter Melinda Lee McCauley, four brothers and one sister.
