Gunder “Ernie” Paulson Jr., 73, of Osceola died Sept. 23, 2013, at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola.
Memorial services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Medora United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jerry Kramer officiated. There was also a memorial service 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong. Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Osceola, was in charge of arrangements. Gunder Ernest “Ernie” Paulson Jr., son of Lila May (Williams) and Gunder Ernest Paulson Sr., was born Sept. 28, 1939, in Estherville.
Ernie grew up in Armstrong.
On Nov. 8, 1957, Ernie married Mary Lee Askeland.
Ernie was the first full-time employee for Art’s Way Manufacturing. He worked for Lee Excavating; the co-op, delivering gas to farmers in the area; the DX Station; welded on the pipeline in southern Iowa and North Dakota, ran Paulson’s Shuttle and Conlin Properties. He also farmed.
Mary died in February 2009.
On July 16, 2011, Ernie married Judy Short.
Ernie served as a volunteer fireman and with the ambulance for 25 years in Armstrong. He was a member of Medora United Methodist Church.
Ernie is survived by his wife Judy Paulson of Osceola; daughters, Darla (Ron) Stewart of Nickerson, Neb., Coleen Johnson of Vancouver, Wash., Marsha Duhn of Emmetsburg and Debbie (Gary) Heck of Eden Prairie, Minn.; sons, Dan (Julie) Paulson of Fairfield Bay, Ark., Gary (Jackie) Short and Dale (Lisa Parrish) Short, all of Osceola, Lance (Valarie) Short of Indianola and Shayne (Nicki) Short of Osceola; grandchildren, Ronnie, Diane, Donnie, Debbie, Josh, Erin, Dennie, Val, Kiersten, Rachel, Aubrey, Tom, Jenny, Mervin, Cathy, Joshua, Chelsey, Caitlynn, Brandon, Abbigail, Aaron, Jake, Taylor, Madison, Seth, Carson, Kyler, Layne and Jadi; great-grandchildren, Collin, Haylee, Hayden, Grace, Lucas, Colton, Lily, Serenity, Isabelle, Sammy, Bryce, Brody, Elliana, Vander, Isaac, Braxton, Justin and two on the way; brothers, Marlin (Carolyn) Paulson and Arnold Paulson, all of Armstrong; sisters, Aileen Rienhardt of Armstrong, Pauline (Roger) Solberg of Ringsted and Karen Ann (Butch) Thackery of Armstrong; sister-in-law Elizabeth (Pete) Rush of Albert Lea, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
In addition to his first wife, Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard, sister Marian Paulson, son Gunder Ernest Paulson III and son-in-law Mark Johnson.
