Boyers named Rathbun Lake Protectors

Rathbun Lake Watershed landowners met Allerton’s Centennial Building for Rathbun Land and Water Alliance’s eighth-annual Protect Rathbun Lake meeting Sept. 12.

Jason and Amy Boyer of Weldon were honored with the Rathbun Lake Protector Award for Clarke County.

In presenting the award, RLWA President John Glenn spoke about the conservation practices, for which Clarke County Soil and Water Conservation District nominated the Boyers.

“Jason and Amy Boyer promote conservation practices on both the farms they own and rent,” Glenn said.“The practices they have installed on their land include a grade stabilization structure, 17 sediment control basins, a watering facility, and fencing in heavy use areas. These conservation measures have reduced sediment delivery to Rathbun Lake by 163 tons per year and by 896 pounds of phosphorous per year.”

Landowners also receiving the Rathbun Lake Protector Award include the following:

Doyle and Barb Ewing of Appanoose County, Connie and the late G.P. Bud Hook of Decatur County, Robert and Carolyn Erickson of Lucas County, Max Moore and Richard and Rhonda Mason of Wayne County.

An honorary Rathbun Lake Protector award was given to Dr. Jerry Miller for the contributions and direction he gave to the formation of the Rathbun Land and Water Alliance nearly 20 years ago.

In addition to landowners, the annual meeting was attended by project partner representatives and elected officials, as well as the Dean of the College of Agriculture of Iowa State University Wendy Wintersteen.
