Mumaw, Showers leading Clarke XC in early going

A pair of freshmen has been leading the Clarke cross country team in the first few meets of the 2013 season.

Lindsey Mumaw and Ian Showers have paced Clarke in each of the past three meets.

At the Winterset Invite on Sept. 10, Mumaw finished eighth in the freshman girls division, running 15:38. Clarke junior Tiffany McKnight also ran 15:38, which was good enough to place her 22nd in the junior girls division.

Mayela Vega finished 24th in the senior girls division at Winterset, running 18:16 for the 2-mile course.

On the boys side, Showers was the lone medalist for the Indians at Winterset. Showers earned one of the top-seven medals with his second-place finish in the freshman boys division. He clocked a time of 14:23 over the 4K course.

Courses were shortened at the Winterset Invite because of the extreme temperatures. The girls, who normally run 4K ran just 2 miles, while the boys, who normally run 5K ran just a 4K.

James Robinson finished 32nd in the freshman boys division, running 17:28. Brock Brokaw placed 46th in 19:21, while Nathan McCann was 51st in 20:34 in the freshman boys division.

Jake Manternach finished 15th in the sophomore boys division, running 15:38, while Nick Johnston ran 33rd in 17:06. Geo Smith crossed the line in 51st, running 19:07.

Nick Norris ran 48th in the junior boys division with his time of 17:23. RJ Sells was 69th in 19:46.

Johnston

At the Johnston Invite on Sept. 12, Showers once again paced the Clarke boys, finishing 11th in 18:05 for the 5K course. Manternach came across in 33rd, running 19:33.

Norris ran 47th in 21:34 and Johnston finished 48th in 21:36. Robinson placed 50th in 21:41. Smith ran 22:46 to earn 56th place. McCann ran 25:25 to finish 65th, while RJ Sells finished 43rd in the JV race, running 25:41.

The boys finished seventh out of 10 teams with a score of 189 points.

On the girls side, Mumaw finished 30th in 19:35, while McKnight crossed in 34th, running 19:59. Vega placed 67th in 23:34.

Ballard

The Clarke boys team finished ninth out of 10 teams in the Class B division Monday at the Ballard Cross Country Invite.

Showers led the Indian boys, just missing earning a top-17 medal with his 18th-place finish in 18:38.

Manternach crossed next for the Indians, running 19:41 for 45th place. Johnston finished 59th in 21:32, while Robinson finished 61st in 21:34 and Brokaw placed 65th in 23:00.

Mumaw once again led the girls team, finishing 44th in 19:09, with McKnight close behind in 46th place with her time of 19:13. Vega placed 57th in 22:15.

Clarke returns to action Tuesday at the Creston Invitational.
