Area cross country

Interstate 35’s Holly McKinney is off to a successful start to her senior cross country campaign.

McKinney placed third in the senior girls division at the Winterset Invitational on Sept. 10, running 13:17. McKinney finished behind Dallas Center-Grimes seniors Madison Waymire (ranked first in Class 3A) and Sydnee Hendricks.

Waymire won the race in 11:53 for the 2-mile course, while Hendricks crossed the line in 12:58.

Interstate 35’s Jordan Yawn finished ninth in the sophomore girls division, running 13:57. Central Decatur’s Sarah Woods finished 12th, running 14:17.

Katlyn Noftsger and Amanda Geddes of Interstate 35 finished 43rd and 46th, respectively, in 21:08 and 21:22.

Central Decatur’s Mary Lindsay finished 17th in the freshman girls division with her time of 16:37. Addy Franks crossed the line in 19:09 for 27th place.

CD junior Trista Waddell placed 14th in the junior girls division with her time of 14:37. Taylor Farnsworth was 32nd in 17:44.

On the boys side, Central Decatur’s Ben Savely finished 14th in the freshman boys division with his time of 16:04 for the 4K course.

Interstate 35’s Nick Ellis and Max Bertrand finished 29th and 30th in 17:09 and 17:24, respectively, while teammate Nick Bertrand finished 35th in 17:53. Central Decatur’s Chance Masters was 41st in 18:32. Gabe Vurlander finished 62nd in 29:13.

Interstate 35’s Morgan Nelson finished 14th in the sophomore boys division, running 15:31, while teammate Garrett McFarland ran 16:32 for 27th place.

Central Decatur’s Quinn McClellon ran 17:12 for 35th and Nick Durrell ran 50th in 18:56. Interstate 35’s Justin Gyles finished 53rd in 19:41.

The Cardinals were led by Sergio Cardenas in the junior boys division, running 15:03 for 18th place. Sam Cook was the top finisher for the Roadrunners in 29th, running 15:40.

Matt Cooper finished 38th for the Cardinals in 16:47, while teammate RJ Kunzie was 51st in 17:39 and Bill Hutchinson finished 53rd in 18:15. Interstate 35’s Garrett Jones ran 18:44 for 59th and Josh Hughes finished 72nd in 20:52. Central Decatur’s David Huppert finished 73rd in 20:52.

Matt Marvin paced the Cardinal boys in the senior division, running 15:07 for 16th place. Wade Lester finished 57th for Interstate 35 in 20:18.

Ballard

The Interstate 35 girls team finished seventh out of 10 teams in Class C with 158 points, one point ahead of Clarion-Goldfield and Eagle Grove, which finished tied with 159 points.

McKinney once again paced the Roadrunners, finishing third in 16:15. Freshman Cheyenne Hiatt placed ninth in 16:59. Sophomore Jordan Yawn finished 24th in 17:45.

Rounding out the scoring for the Roadrunners was Kirsten Schirm in 60th and Amanda Geddes in 62nd, running 21:56 and 25:25, respectively. Katlyn Noftsger and Crystal Jacobe also competed on the Interstate 35 varsity, finishing 63rd and 64th.

The Interstate 35 boys team finished eighth out of 10 teams in Class C with 210 points.

Junior Sam Cook led the Roadrunners in 25th place, running 19:28. Morgan Nelson finished in 19:38, running 28th place. Garrett McFarland ran 20:52 for 44th place.

Max Bertrand and Nick Bertrand rounded out the scoring for Interstate 35, both crossing the line in 21:29. Garrett Jones and Nick Ellis also competed on the varsity squad, running 21:45 and 22:19, respectively.
